A Simple Guide for Partners Who Want to Help

Supporting someone through labour can feel both exciting and a little overwhelming.

Many birth partners worry about doing the “right thing”, saying the right words, or remembering everything they learned in antenatal classes.

The truth is, your partner doesn’t need you to have all the answers.

What they need most is your calm presence, reassurance and encouragement.

Small acts of support can make a meaningful difference during labour, helping your partner feel safe, supported and confident as they bring your baby into the world.

If you'd like a simple printable cheat sheet you can save on your phone or bring to the birth, you can download it at the end of this article.

Your Most Important Role During Labour

Many partners assume they need to manage labour or take charge of the situation.

In reality, your role is much simpler and much more powerful.

Your role is to:

  • stay calm

  • offer reassurance

  • help create a comfortable environment

  • advocate or communicate if your partner asks you to

Your presence helps your partner feel safe, and feeling safe is incredibly important for labour hormones to work effectively.

You are not expected to be a medical expert.

You are there to be their support person.

Practical Ways You Can Help During Labour

There are many small things birth partners can do that make a real difference during labour.

Sometimes it’s as simple as:

  • offering water or snacks

  • reminding your partner to change positions

  • helping them move or walk during contractions

  • offering gentle massage or counter-pressure

  • encouraging slow breathing

Labour can last for several hours, so even small gestures of support can help your partner stay comfortable and focused.

The Birth Partner Cheat Sheet includes a simple list of comfort techniques that are easy to remember during labour.

Creating a Calm Birth Environment

Labour hormones work best when the environment feels safe, private and calm.

Birth partners often play an important role in protecting that space.

You can help by:

  • keeping lighting soft where possible

  • speaking calmly and reassuringly

  • limiting unnecessary interruptions

  • helping your partner feel relaxed and supported

These small adjustments can help your partner stay in the rhythm of labour.

When Decisions Are Offered During Labour

During labour, the care team may sometimes offer different options or interventions.

In these moments, it can be helpful for partners to ask a few simple questions so you both feel informed and confident about the decision.

One framework that many birth teams use is called BRAIN.

This simple approach helps families explore options and make decisions that feel right for them.

The full Birth Partner Guide explains how this works and how partners can use it during labour.

Labour Can Take Time

One of the most helpful things birth partners can bring to labour is patience.

Labour often unfolds gradually, and your calm encouragement can help your partner stay focused and supported throughout the process.

Even when you feel unsure of what to do, simply being present and supportive is incredibly valuable.

You are an important part of the birth team.

How Doula Support Helps Birth Partners

Many partners want to be as supportive as possible, but it can sometimes feel like a lot of responsibility.

This is one reason some families choose to work with a doula.

A doula supports both the birthing person and their partner, helping partners feel more confident and supported throughout the experience.

A doula can help by:

  • guiding comfort techniques during labour

  • helping partners understand what’s happening

  • creating a calm and supportive environment

  • allowing partners to focus on emotional support rather than trying to remember everything

Many partners say that having a doula present helped them feel more relaxed and confident during the birth.

A Gentle Reminder

Supporting someone through labour is a powerful experience.

You don’t need to be perfect, and you don’t need to have all the answers.

Your calm presence, encouragement and care are often the most valuable things you can offer.
